Translation Studies has been frequently attracted towards research models generated by other disciplines, such as Linguistics, Philosophy, Anthropology, or Sociology. Although the benefits of this engagement with external theories are many, so are the risks. This talk will reflect on the impact of a powerful theory —Pierre Bourdieu's sociological framework— in the context of a specific research project that studied the visibility of women translators in Spain. By retracing the emergence and development of this project, I would like to reflect on the importance of sociological 'self-analysis', as well as the ways in which research can illuminate the relationship between the investigator and its object.
