Introduction to the ecoresponsible wood construction industrial research chair (CIRCERB) at Laval University – Building systems and fire risk

Abstract: CIRCERB is an interdisciplinary applied research initiative on wood construction in Eastern Canada. Among its particularities, CIRCERB deploys its research based on a strong relationship with industrial partners where Architects, Engineers, General contractors, Building solution providers, and Building users are included. An overview of the research program will be presented. More specifically, research projects and research results on buildings systems and fire risk will be presented. Hybrid systems, and wood and concrete structural systems, are an important part of this research program. Results on ductile connectors for wood beams and concrete slabs will be presented through outcomes from recent MSc research projects.

Bio: Pierre Blanchet is professor in the wood engineering program at Université Laval. He is holder of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada industrial research chair on ecoresponsible wood construction (CIRCERB) since 2013. CIRCERB is a major research initiative serving both the construction and the forest products value chains with 12 practitioner partners and a 55 research project portfolio. Professor Blanchet is member of the Renewable Material Research Centre (CRMR) and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Operationalization of the Sustainable Development (CIRODD), two strategic research groups. His work focuses on decreasing the environmental footprint of the buildings by using wood based building systems and wood products as a mitigation tools.
