Title:
Robotics, Data Science (and Skill Learning) in Africa

Abstract:
This talk consists of two parts. First, Benjamin will provide an overview of some of the primary application areas on which he is working on at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa, particularly around the areas of robotics and data science, and discuss the current informatics landscape in South Africa.

He will then present one of his recent projects, involving learning multiple different skills from human demonstration. The model is based on a framework of inverse reinforcement learning, and segments demonstrated trajectories into a set of hypothesised skills which can be used to reconstruct the demonstrations. Benjamin shows that this is able to correctly identify the original set of skills in a simulated quadcopter domain.
