In this paper, I shall reflect on my experience of translating an anthology of Goan short stories originally written in Portuguese between the 1860s and the 1980s into English for a publisher in India today, considering the problems of the model of translation as crossing cultures (given that here it was the translator, rather than the translation, that travelled outside his home space), the relation between global Englishes (criss-crossed with global Portugueses), and some of the particular challenges presented by rendering the texts and compiling the anthology, ranging from non-standard lexical items and grammar, unglossed words and phrases in bhasha languages, the demands of fluency vs. non-fluency, to issues of eurochronology, literary systems, genre theory and post-editing.
