Abstract:

This seminar summarises the research outcomes of a PhD project studying innovative building materials, with a focus on Phase Change Materials (PCMs). This covers a wide spectrum of experimental testing ranging from micro-scale thermal analysis, through bench-scale flammability, and finally up to intermediate-scale standard fire testing. A unique and novel fire testing framework is outlined to be able to quantify the fire risk associated with these materials to enable their safe usage in buildings.

Biography:

Martyn McLaggan is a final year PhD student in the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering within IIE at the University of Edinburgh. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow with an MEng in Architectural Engineering. His PhD studies focus on a developing a novel method for characterising the fire performance of phase change materials as part of a project funded by the BRE Trust. During his studies, Martyn obtained a John Moyes Lessells scholarship to enable a visit to the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland, Australia in 2015.
