Clinical trials constitute the latest stages in the drug development process when candidate drugs are tested for the first time in humans. The information collected through the various phases of this clinical research relate to key details of the efficacy, side effects and also safety of new drugs being developed. Thus this type of information is of paramount importance to improve patients care or to safeguard their health. The diffusion of results of clinical trials in scientific journals is also important in order to disseminate this key information. This research focusses on the diffusion of clinical trials in scientific journals and in the analysis of various elements that shape the citation impact of publications reporting the results of clinical trials. Compared to previous studies, which are typically limited to a number of therapeutic areas, we base our study on all the clinical trials registered at ClinicalTrials.gov in the period 2005-2015.
