The imperial landscape of Edinburgh’s Calton Hill acts as a tribute to the city’s Athenian ambitions of the early 19th century. Yet the dialogue surrounding its development, and the reception of the hill after its heyday tells us more about the broader issues, thoughts, and perspectives of Scottish society than just a passion for ‘all things Greek'. This talk will explore the resonance of the picturesque within the 19th century design of the hill, and consider how this, alongside the broader cultural and political resonance of Calton Hill's monumental urban landscape provides insight into notions of Scottish identity and its relationship with the British state throughout the last 200 years.
