Between the 1950s and the 1980s, more than seventy new theatres were built across Britain, supported by public money. This paper will locate some of these buildings within their wider architectural, social, and urban historical contexts, showing how culture and leisure – and the buildings in which they were accommodated – were fundamentally related to ideas of modern urbanity and modern citizenship. The result was a new sort of public architecture that was at once distinctive and also ‘mainstream’.

All welcome.
