ABSTRACT:
Big Data has great potential to positively impact the lives of many people; but with those potential benefits also come the associated ethical and privacy risks. People are naturally concerned about what negatives may come from the use of their data and even when they are oblivious to the collection and use, we as scientists have an ethical obligation to evaluate the risks ourselves. In this talk I will discuss these issues at a theoretical level and then look at how we can apply these theories to the practical problems associated with big data and data science.
BIO:
Dr. Kami Vaniea is a Human Factors of Security and Privacy Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Her work focuses on helping people use security and privacy technologies in ways that allow them to control their own information as well as feel safe using their own technologies. Dr. Vaniea was previously an Assistant Professor in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University and her PhD is from Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Department
