The structural behaviour of R/C and P/C members in presence of natural fires

Abstract:

The vast majority of the research works carried out in the past on the fire behaviour of R/C and P/C members were carried out in standard fire conditions up to failure, i.e. under fire scenario with a continuously increasing temperature. Real fires, however, are always characterized by the presence of the cooling phase. Within this framework, the question regarding the safety of structural members throughout the whole duration of a fire, including the cooling phase, requires some peculiar aspects to be taken into account: (a) the cooling phase characterizing natural fires implies, generally speaking, non-monotonic stress paths inside concrete and steel: as a consequence, studying the structural behaviour under natural fires obliges to consider the complete behaviour of structural materials (loading-unloading); (b) the redistribution of the internal forces between concrete and steel is a complex phenomenon, because of the transient strain components that result from heating stressed concrete. Within this framework, the seminar aims to tackle the aforementioned issues and also to discuss some examples concerning concrete members under natural fires.

Bio:

Patrick Bamonte is Assistant Professor of Structural Design at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano since 2008. In 2017 he obtained the Italian National Qualification (ASN) for Associate Professor. His main research interests include structural behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures in extreme conditions (fire and earthquake), and materials characterization at high temperature. He is author and co-author of several papers presented at national and international conferences, and published in peer-reviewed journals. He serves as member in ACI committees (216 and 237) and in CEN.
